 Ground Opener (to Seamus Heaney)

The planter digs his field to cultivate ground,
Opening the living earth however flawed

So sun and air and the cloudy breath of God
Enhance, hallow root truths burial browned.
Among fresh things his spade turns up – remnants
Marking diaries unwritten, anonymous
Until revealed by aerating hands of callus
Snugly gripping the handle of his implements.

Hard clod and stubborn stone are also uncovered.
Each thrust of boot on blade deepens the furrow’s
Ancient disclosure. Now and again, soil marrow’s
Nutrient-rich rare elements once offered
Exclusive to vegetables are for the taking
Year upon ground broken year in the making.
